This monument to the Georgia 30th Infantry Regiment is in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chikamauga, fought September 19-20, 1863.

Wilson’s Brigade consisted of the 25th Georgia, 29th Georgia, 30th Georgia, 1st Georgia Battalion Sharpshooters and the 4th Louisiana Battalion during the Chickamauga campaign. A line of markers nearby shows the locations of each regiment at 8:30 A. M. on Sept. 19, 1863.

Many Mayo relatives served in the Georgia Infantry Regiment.

John Joseph R Mayo (1837-1907) served in the Civil War for the Confederacy in the Georgia 30th Infantry Regiment, Company A (later reorganized into Company I).   He was mustered in as a private on September 25, 1861 and was appointed 3d Sergeant May 15, 1862. He likely participated in the battle of Chickamauga as he was most certainly active at that time.  John was captured at Nashville, TN on December 16, 1864 and released at Camp Chase, on June 13, 1865.
