Possible Ancestor Surnames: Flint – Williams – Hill – Domier (?) – Castler
1 – Casler Surname
Possible variants: Kassler/Kastler/Kesler/Kessler
According to Ancestry.com: Casler is a spelling variant of the German Kassler.
This surname could be a habitational name from any of several places in Cumbria (ENG) called Castle Howe. Alternatively it could be derived from Middle English ‘casteler’ which means dweller/worker at a castle.
As per the House of Names: Casler/Kesler was first found in the Hessen and the Rhineland. There the family became noted for its many branches in the region and on its status & influence which was sought by local royalty.
Some of the first settlers in America with the surname of Kessler arrived around 1709.
2 – Casler Family Lineage
Lineage has been difficult to confirm as the exact ancestry of Michael Casler (1853 – ?) has not yet been located. One working theory is that he may have ended up in New Jersey with other “Castler” relatives, although at this time no concrete evidence has been found.
In addition to hitting a ‘brick wall’ with Michael, his wife (Julia Jane Flint) also has unconfirmed parentage.
Julia Jane Flint (1862-1920), is most likely the child of Alexander X. Flint (1827-1901). Although this fact has yet to be proven, I would maintain that the likelyhood of parentage is quite strong. If/when confirmed, the family & ancestry of Alexander Flint is well documented. The Flint family can trace their heritage to some of the earliest settlers (pre-1620’s) and have at least least one ancestor who was a passenger on the Mayflower.
3 – Civil War
Pending the Flint connection – many great wartime stories exist & will be added at that time.
4 – Revolutionary War
Pending the Flint connection – many great wartime stories exist & will be added at that time.
5 – Early Colonists
Pending the Flint connection – at least one ancestor traveled on the Mayflower. Also: Older generations look to have settled in Virginia well before the Mayflower arrived.
